Should I buy a direct pull, or a bypass system? |
With direct pull systems the dirt and debris go through the belt / fan / motor, into the bag. As a result they tend to have more problems. If you pick up a hard object you risk breaking the fan, or even the motor. The bypass system eliminates all those problems. Hard objects go directly into the bag. |

Should I buy because I'm familiar with the name or I hear it advertised a lot? |
While most vacuums were made well years ago. Today most of the name's people are familiar with just don't hold up. People tend to buy them because you can get them at any department store. The better vacuums can only be purchased at a Vacuum Center, these are well worth it! |

Should I buy a 12amp vacuum for the best performance? |
Most people feel that the bigger the motor the better the vacuum will clean. Not true! While a bigger motor does give more power in most cases. The design of the vacuum, and the amount of airflow are even more important. We have 6amp vacuums that will out perform many 12amp vacuums; simply because of better design. We have 12amp vacuums that pull about 30-40lbs. water weight, and others that pull from 65-105lbs. water weight. So as you can see vacuums vary a lot. So rather than just buying off the shelf because a vacuum looks pretty, come in to a Vacuum Center, and feel the difference. |

| Upright | Canister |
|---|---|
|
Most people today prefer an upright vacuum. Even people that were used to
canisters before in the past. They have found that better quality uprights
are more convenient to use.
They like the fact that you can just pull it out of where ever they keep it and vacuum. There is no hose to attach or tank to pull around. The biggest complaints that people had was that they didn't clean as well, or it was hard to use in hard to reach places or up steps. Though that is true with the majority of uprights, that is not the case with the better quality ones. The better uprights will clean better than most canisters of twice the price or more. As for tool options, they have solved that problem as well. So a good quality upright is well worth considering. |
While upright vacuums have a big hold on the market. There is still a
place for a good canister.
For example, if you have a lot of hard wood floors and part carpet; you might find a canister a better way to go. Even if you have mostly carpet, they do an excellent job with the right power head. Canisters as a rule will last longer than most uprights. Also depending on what canister you pick they will have a better filtration system. You should take the time to talk to a knowledgeable dealer that can show you both. The pro's and con's of each. So you can make an informed choice. |
